Jo is a highly experienced shoulder physiotherapist whose career has been dedicated to advancing the assessment and rehabilitation of shoulder conditions.
About

A Leading Specialist in Shoulder Rehabilitation

From early in her career, Jo focused exclusively on the upper limb, becoming one of the UK’s first specialist Upper Limb Physiotherapists in 1995. Her work has consistently centred on helping individuals understand their shoulder problem, regain confidence in movement, and return to the activities that matter most to them.

Jo spent over 25 years as a Clinical Specialist at the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit, working alongside leading orthopaedic surgeons in a service recognised internationally for excellence in shoulder and elbow care. During this time, she played a key role in shaping clinical pathways and advancing multidisciplinary approaches to complex shoulder conditions.

Her clinical expertise has been further developed through international fellowships and collaboration with specialists across Europe and the United States. This experience has informed a practice grounded in both evidence and real-world clinical application.

Today, Jo continues to work as a specialist shoulder physiotherapist, supporting individuals with a wide range of shoulder problems, from persistent pain to complex post-operative rehabilitation.

Alongside her clinical work, Jo has built a global reputation as a leading educator in shoulder rehabilitation. She has delivered teaching and training to clinicians in over 25 countries, supporting thousands of physiotherapists, sports medicine professionals, and healthcare teams in developing their clinical reasoning and confidence.

She is a co-founder of the International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists and has held senior roles within the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society. Her involvement in these organisations reflects her commitment to advancing education and collaboration within the profession.

Jo is regularly invited to speak at international conferences and to deliver specialist training for healthcare organisations and elite sports teams. Her teaching is recognised for its clarity, practicality, and ability to translate complex evidence into meaningful clinical decision making.

Jo’s approach to shoulder rehabilitation is shaped by a strong belief in individualised, patient-centred care. She completed a Masters in Advanced Practice with a focus on the biopsychosocial model, which underpins her clinical reasoning and treatment approach.

Rather than focusing solely on structural findings, Jo considers the wider factors that influence pain and recovery. These may include lifestyle, training load, expectations, and previous experiences. Her aim is to help each individual understand their condition, reduce uncertainty, and move forward with a clear and confident plan.

This approach allows her to support both patients and clinicians in navigating complexity, avoiding unnecessary interventions, and achieving meaningful, long-term outcomes.
